Writing Assignment for Week 2:

1.         By Thursday, January 13, answer the following question in the Comment Box for Lecture 4:

Question:  David committed what we would consider grievous sins (adultery, complicity in the death of his mistress’ husband).  Why does the Bible mention that David committed these sins?  How did God punish him?  How did God show him forgiveness?  What is the lesson we can learn from this transgression (about 200 – 300 words, please).

2.         By Tuesday, January 18, write a paper about the following topic and send it to me at kerryman2424@gmail.com
In these three lectures (4-6)  we have seen various ways that God shows love for humans.  But we also see that humans are supposed to express love for God.  Show how each of the books you read (Samuel, Song of Solomon, and Psalms) shows the way humans are supposed to demonstrate love for God.  (Note:  When you read commentary on Song of Solomon, almost all commentators mention that this book is metaphorical.  By this, it is meant that the love the lovers in the book express for one another is a metaphor for the way we are supposed to feel about God and God should feel about us.  So, remember, that the physical , mental, and spiritual love in that book is supposed to tell us how to love God in romantic relationships.)  This should be about 750 great words.

  1. God declared his love for David but yet he still was with sin. I think the bible mentions the crimes David committed to show that even someone held with high and prestigious regard can still sin and be punished for it, and then forgiven. David was punished for his sins by the death of his first child with Bathsheba and with the rebellion of his older son Absalom. God showed forgiveness through his unconditional love for David. Even though David committed a callous and heartless act by stealing another man’s wife and then having that man murdered, he was still Israel’s king and after he confessed his sins; he was forgiven. Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." (2 Samuel 12:13a) And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has taken away your sin; you shall not die." (2 Samuel 12:13b) Even God’s chosen one, King David, had spiritual weaknesses, and we all do. David had sinned, and thought that he had managed to build an effective cover-up plan; God is the all knowing being. The lesson to be learned is that your negative actions will catch up to you; one way or another! Repent for your sins and cleans your heart and you to will be forgiven in the eyes of the God.
